Invitation to the Mathematical Colloquium

Wednesday, June 26, 2024, conference room (R107), 5 p.m. s.t.

Professor Dr. Ralf Kornhuber , AG Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations, FU Berlin talks about the topic: " Numerical Homogenization and Subspace Correction"

Abstract: Solutions of multiscale problems typically combine reasonable large-scale properties with irregular behavior on fine scales, the resolution of which finally dominates the overall computational cost.

We first consider elliptic equations with (non-periodically) oscillating coefficients as a model problem and present recent results on iterative homogenization by subspace decomposition and on orthogonal decomposition with localization by local smoothing. As an outlook towards frictional fault networks from the geosciences, we then apply these techniques to fractal interface problems.

Starting at 16:30, there will be an opportunity for all interested parties to talk over coffee and tea in the meeting room (R206).
