Invitation to the Mathematical Colloquium
Wednesday, 06.11.2024, conference room (R107), 5 p.m. s.t.
PD Dr. habil. Bernd Mulansky talks about the topic:
"Largest small polygons - "just" gimmickry?"
Abstract: The playful question of the maximum perimeter and area of a small convex polygon (diameter at most one) with a given number of sides was largely answered by Reinhardt (1922). However, the case of a power of two as the number of sides is still open today. Our walk in the footsteps of Karl Reinhardt provides insights into some areas of mathematics, whereby the following keywords should arouse interest: Polygons and zonogons (geometry), Blaschke's selection theorem (analysis), dihedral groups (algebra), random polygons (stochastics), two-colored warps (combinatorics), MINLP (optimization), arbitrary precision (numerics and scientific computing). We will learn surprising things and encounter curiosities along the way.
The lecture should be accessible to all those interested in mathematics. However, it offers considerable potential for addiction, as more questions remain unanswered than are answered.
From 4:30 p.m., all those interested will have the opportunity to talk over coffee and tea in the meeting room (R206).
