Invitation to the Mathematical Colloquium

Wednesday, June 19, 2024, conference room (R107), 5 p.m. s.t.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Kulgemeyer, Institute for Didactics of Natural Sciences, University of Bremen will speak on the topic: "Illusions of understanding and learning with explanatory videos"

Abstract: Explanatory videos are consumed by learners of all ages and in all subjects, e.g. to prepare for exams but also for entertainment purposes. Explanatory videos are often watched in leisure time or as part of informal learning; there are a large number of such videos covering almost all curriculum topics. Research indicates that explanatory videos do not necessarily only have positive effects: it can happen that learners have the feeling that they have understood the content after watching a video - but objectively have not gained any understanding or have even built up misconceptions. However, the feeling of understanding alone is sufficient to consider further instruction redundant and irrelevant. In this lecture, studies will be presented that have empirically investigated the illusion of understanding following explanatory videos and strategies for dealing with this productively will be discussed.

There will be an opportunity for all interested parties to talk over coffee and tea in the meeting room (R206) from 16:30.
