Farewell to Prof. Dr. Lutz Angermann

Dr. Lutz Angermann had been Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics at Clausthal University of Technology since 2001. He retired at the end of September 2023 as part of a colloquium. Among the speakers were former doctoral students and long-standing employees who spoke about their current scientific work. The current Managing Director Olaf Ippisch thanked Mr. Angermann, also on behalf of the Presidential Board, for his many years of commitment in teaching and research and as Managing Director of the Institute.

Lutz Angermann, born in 1959 in Radeberg near Dresden, studied mathematics with a minor in physics at Kharkiv State University in what is now Ukraine from 1977 to 1982. He then completed his doctorate at the Technical University of Dresden in 1987. This was followed by his habilitation at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1995. From 1998 to 2001, Angermann was Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the University of Magdeburg and was then offered a professorship at Clausthal University of Technology, where he worked for more than two decades.

Prof. Angermann's research focuses on the development and mathematical analysis of numerical algorithms for solving partial differential equations, with a particular interest in finite volume and finite element methods and their application to problems in physics and technology. This includes, for example, the modelling and simulation of multifunctional materials whose transparency and absorption properties can be specifically influenced non-invasively under the influence of electromagnetic fields, for example to develop optical switches or to optimize frequency multipliers.

Prof. Angermann is the author of around 135 scientific papers, including five books as co-author, and editor of two edited volumes. Most recently, Springer-Verlag published the new edition of the approximately 800-page advanced textbook "Numerical Methods for Elliptic and Parabolic Partial Differential Equations" and an introductory textbook "Grundkurs Analysis und Lineare Algebra" tailored to the mathematics education at Clausthal University of Technology.
