Prof. Dr. Stephan Westphal
Network flow optimization in theory and practice
What is the quickest way to get from Hamburg to Clausthal? How should escape routes be designed so that sports facilities can be evacuated quickly in the event of a bomb threat? How can as many couples as possible be formed on a dating website? These and many other practical optimization problems can be formulated as classical network flow problems that can be solved elegantly using mathematical methods. On this day, we will model many such problems as network flow problems and get to know the methods that can be used to solve them. We will discover some amazing results and finally we will see how to solve even very large network flow problems with the freely available software package NetworkX.

Intuitive data analysis with the help of decision trees
Decision trees offer an intuitive way of analyzing causal relationships between (potential) influencing variables and response variables and making data-driven decisions without making restrictive assumptions. To begin with, neither in-depth insights into probability theory nor any special knowledge of higher mathematics or computer science are necessary. Decision trees are therefore also an excellent introduction to machine learning and data analytics. The workshop will provide an application-oriented introduction.
Dr. Wolfgang Riemer, Cologne
Understanding statistics
Why is statistics generally considered "difficult"? The lecture attempts to provide answers and shows ways of overcoming unnecessary stumbling blocks by promoting basic concepts, even in heterogeneous classes. Authentic examples play just as central a role as manual and digital simulations to support concept formation. The experimental lecture is suitable for teachers at both secondary levels. No previous knowledge of statistics is required.
