In steel industry, the methods of simulation so far have rarely been used. Current projects as part of a cooperation with Dillinger Hütte GTS has shown that the methods of simulation can be a great help to detailed considerations of production units and capacity planning of production networks.

The integrated steel mill Dillinger Hütte GTS in Dillingen produces heavy plates with unusual dimensions and special characteristics for the production of oil platforms, pipelines, bridge beams, buckets, pressure vessels and ships.

In anticipation of a comprehensive simulation of the smelter first was tested in which extent the heavy plate production in Dillingen is accessible to mathematical queuing models despite their technical complexity of analytical performance evaluation. As simulation tool the EPOS Analyzer was used, which was developed by our research in partnership with IBM.

As a result of the simulation study it was found that model and practice are in good agreement. The bottle neck hierachy contains all the limiting factors and aggregates, which may be observed in everyday life. It should be emphasized that high inventories in the mill primarily caused by the required minimum holdings before the stoves and the waiting times at the chill stations and are less due to high workloads.
